There are numerous factors that contribute to low self-confidence and everbody is unique, in that, these factors combine and interact differently. Your genes, childhood experiences, social and cultural background, and other life experiences all plat a role.

For example, a unhappy childhood where parents (or other significant people such as teachers) were extremely critical. Poor academic performance in school resulting in a lack of confidence. Ongoing stressful life event such as relationship breakdown or financial trouble.

Having low self-confidence undermines your faith in your ability to be successful and competent. Low self-confidence manifests itself in a steady feeling of inferiority that can prevent you from making progress and accomplishing your goals in life.
Whereas, low self-esteem is how we value and perceive ourselves. It's based on our opinions and beliefs about ourselves, which can sometimes feel really difficult to change.
